Best free things to do this May!

Need some ideas for ways to shake up your weekend activities or half-term holiday without spending money? It often feels like if we want to have a nice time we have to dip into the ol’ purse, but there’s actually a bunch of things you can do this May while you leave your pennies at home – and we don’t just mean walking around the block, doing gardening, or visiting the park you go to with the kids all the time! Here’s a round up of a few of our favourite things we love doing in May, that you *may* want to try out too (see what we did there?).

Be a tourist in your own hometown

If you’re not planning a getaway this May, why not spend a day being a tourist in your own home town? Check out the local guided walks and cycle paths that you’ve never tried, or visit a local picnic spot you’ve never taken a pack-up to before. You may find some secret pathways or secluded spots you didn’t know were right round the corner, and even get in some decent exercise while you explore!

Visit a local farm

Feel the need to get back to nature? Or just don’t know what to do with the kids in the upcoming half term holiday? The UK is filled with local farms that are free to visit. A few of our favourites are Bath City Farm, Old Holly Farm in Preston, Stonebridge City Farm in Nottingham, Swansea Community Farm, Mudchute Park in London, and Thornton Hall Farm Country Park in Skipton. It’s a fun, educational, and cheap way to spend the day in nature (and get the kids off all the darned screens!).

Spend a rainy day in museums

Summer may be on it’s way, but we’re still having the odd Spring-showers, so don’t let a rainy day stop you from spending the day doing something fun, and free! Most cities in the UK have incredible museums or art galleries that you don’t have to pay for just waiting to be explored.

Try meditating this International Meditation Day

It’s been a crazy few years for all of us, and even though it feels like things are settling down again, it can be difficult to get back into a relaxed head state again. Enter International Meditation Day on May 21st. Meditation has been proven to reduce stress and improve general wellbeing, and the good news is: it’s totally FREE! If you’ve not tried it before, there are tonnes of brilliant guided meditations free on Youtube to follow along with, so set up a comfortable spot in your garden or your home and give meditation a go.

Support your community at Pride festivals

There are 14 different Pride parades happening in the month of May around the country: Falmouth, Exeter, Furness, Newquay, Gloucestershire/Cheltenham, Penzance, Trans Pride Scotland, Manchester, Worcester, Chichester, Aberdeen, Saltash, Witney and Durham. Attending your local pride festival is a fun way to support your local community, and you can attend most without having to spend money; just turn up, share a smile, wave the flag, enjoy the music and festivities and know that you’re doing good by supporting your local LGBTQ+ community. It supports an incredible cause just by being there, and is a fun day for people of all ages, genders, races or sexualities!

Bake away

Here’s your prompt to try some new recipes? Many of you lovely lot may be starting to think about getting a bit healthier after a few months of Christmas, followed by pancakes day, followed by Easter and all those yummy hols in the run-up to beach days and shorts-weather. Well, if that sounds like you but you’re not liking the sound of giving up your favourite naughty snacks, then try some new ways to make your favourite desserts and snacks in a lower-calorie way! There’s a tonne of recipes on our blog, and plenty that are even fun for all the family to make, like these smores, these pancakes, and these salted caramel cookies. Enjoy!
